There were some very convincing expositions written by students during this time and it is great to see them listening to and applying the feedback to improve their next piece of writing.

This term we have been focusing on writing correct sentences. Students have been writing simple sentences and then turning them into compound sentences through the use of compound conjunctions.

You can see an example of writing which shows simple sentences transformed into compound sentences.

Week 3 Literacy – Rocket Writing

Posted by misscarey | Posted in Literacy | Posted on 23/10/2015

This week we have done some Rocket Writing. Rocket Writing is lots of fun! It is when the students are shown an inspirational picture, word or phrase and have a short amount of time to write, without any planning time. Students are allowed to write any text type they like, the focus is on just writing for enjoyment. There were only a few hesitant starters, but everyone got something written down and as I walked around I could see how engaged everyone was.

Here are a few examples of what the students were able to write in just 10 minutes. I have taken the liberty to fix up some of the spelling and punctuation.

There was a sheep. He was dawdling. He was lazy and a goat pushed the sheep in the bottom and ran away from the sheep. The sheep started to run. He ran so fast he started… Ella

There once was a lamb who was lonely. He did not have any food or drinks. He was living in a tree. He didn’t have a bed also he was very poor and he couldn’t buy anything. Rishi

One day I was walking to Isobel’s house for a sleepover. I wasn’t there yet and my friend Sarah the lamb was flying, she said ‘hi Miah, Stella the witch made me fly by magic. Aleara is trying to stop me. Stop! You’ll get turned into something.’ So she hid behind the bushes. ‘How do I get down?’ Sarah said ‘I’ll get the wand and make you come back down.’ So I ran and jumped and… Miah

We have continued writing expositions this week. Many of the students have nearly finished their expositions.

Together we wrote an exposition about why children should learn to swim. This was typed up and pinned up at the Ararat Fitness Centre where members of the community can read our exposition and learn about the importance of learning to swim.

This week we have started to learn about expositions. Everyone remembered learning about them earlier in the year. We started by reading an exposition and then came up with the Learning Intention and Success Criteria. This is our Learning Intention and Success Criteria.

 LI and SC exposition

During the week, we read lots of expositions, wrote expositions as a whole class after coming up with them orally. We then had a go at planning an exposition in small groups.

Working together to come up with arguments for a group exposition.

The students have enjoyed getting back into Daily 5.

Special Event – Ashton’s Huski Pups

Yesterday I brought in my huski puppies to school.

I wanted everyone in my class to see the puppies.

Everyone thought they were cute.

I passed the puppies around the circle. People thought they were soft.

The puppies names are Takani and Yokone. Takani is black and white, she has one blue eye and one green one. Yokone is red and white, she has a black eyes.

I really like playing with the puppies. Next week we are selling the huski puppies.

Week 3 Literacy – Narratives – Orientation

Posted by misscarey | Posted in Literacy | Posted on 30/07/2015

This week we continued to focus on the orientation of narratives, but we were focusing on the setting.

We all got to draw the setting for our story and then we had to write the description for some else’s setting.

Week 1 Literacy – Writing Narratives – Pronouns

2

Posted by misscarey | Posted in Literacy | Posted on 15/07/2015

This week we have started our Narrative unit. We have been focusing on pronouns. Pronouns are words that can replace nouns. We learnt that we don’t want to write a sentence with lots of names; for example ‘Billy ran across the oval, then Billy jumped over the log, after that Billy rolled down the hill.” We can change the sentence by using some pronouns instead of the noun, like this; “Billy ran across the oval, then he jumped over the log, after that he rolled down the hill.” We remembered that it’s a good idea to use the pronoun, noun, noun pattern when writing.

Here are some YouTube clips that we watched.

Week 7 Literacy – Descriptions

Posted by misscarey | Posted in Literacy | Posted on 28/05/2015

This week we have continued to write descriptions. This time we are writing descriptions about ourselves. These descriptions will go into the time capsule to be opened up in 50 years! We will 56/57/58 years old!!

Week 4 and 5 Literacy – Procedure texts

Feedback is hugely important in 1/2C. In 1/2C we know how important it is to give timely, helpful, kind and specific feedback to ourselves and each other.

During our unit on procedure texts, the students have been giving themselves feedback in the form of a checklist, giving and receiving feedback from their friends about the procedure text as well as feedback from me.

I have decided to try out the ‘Star and a Step’ feedback during this unit. After their first procedure text I gave each child some feedback; I gave them a star (something they did really well and should continue to do), and a step (something that they could do to make their next procedure better), this feedback was directly linked to the success criteria. The students had time to read their feedback and talk to me about their next step, this made them aware of what to focus on for their next procedure. After their second procedure text I gave them a ‘Star and a Step’ feedback again and the students compared the feedback and their procedures. Many of them were happy with the improvements they made.

Congratulations everyone in 1/2C for giving and receiving feedback with Growth Mindsets.

Week 2 – 3 Literacy – Procedure Texts

Over the last two weeks the students have been learning to read and follow procedure texts.

In Week 2 all Grade 1/2 students got to make ANZAC biscuits. First, they had to cut and reorder the recipe. Then 1/2C and 1/2H worked together with the assistance of Sri and Judy to measure and mix the ingredients. Everyone had fun rolling their ANZAC biscuits and of course eating them afterwards!

1/2C have been writing procedure texts in groups and on their own. Everyone in 1/2C received a star and a step feedback from me about one of their procedure texts they had written, they are using this feedback to know what was good about it and they should keep doing and what their next step is to make their next procedure even better!  Students had a go at assessing their own writing against the success criteria too.

I look forward to reading more procedure texts next week.

Week 5 Literacy – Book Character Descriptions

Posted by misscarey | Posted in Literacy, Special Events | Posted on 15/08/2014

Last week I attended an inspiring PD along with the rest of the staff from Ararat 800 and we learnt many great things about teaching spelling and writing. The 1/2 teachers have decided to spend a lot of time teaching our students how to write descriptions really well, as descriptions are a very important stepping stone for our students to be able to write other text types.

This week was Book Week and all the students dressed up fabulously as their favourite book character. All students have been working on planning, drafting, editing and publishing their descriptions.

You can see a photo of how we planned and a few of the descriptions that were finished. As they are finished they will be hung up in our classroom and you are welcome to come in and read your child’s description.

Babe

This week we watched the movie Babe and then wrote a response about it. Below are some examples:

Babe

In this movie the characters are Rex and Fly the sheep dogs Martha and Arthur the farmers and Babe the pig.

This is about a pig named Babe that gets taken to a farm and he goes on a big adventure.

You would have to see this movie to find out more.

I recommend everyone to see it especially kids.

Babe

In the movie Babe Arthur and Martha lived on a farm with Maa the sheep and Ferdinand the duck and Fly and Rex and Jilly the cat.

One day Arthur and Martha went to a festival. They had to guess how much a pig weighed. Arthur got the weight right so they won the pig.

If you want to see what happens next you will have to watch the movie.

I recommend for all children to see the movie.
