The first two weeks of this term we have focused on Place Value. Students have continued to work on their individual Place Value Goals and have learnt to round numbers to the nearest ten or 100. Another big focus has been on understanding the place value of certain digits in a number.

This week students have had a lot of fun working on their Place Value goals. We have been learning to read, write, make, order, place numbers on a number line and work out what numbers are 1 more/1 less and 10 more/10 less. These activities have been differentiated and were therefore a good fit for each individual child.

You can see some photos of the students working hard.

This week in Numeracy, we have been working on our Place Value goals. Everyone has really focused and enjoyed challenging themselves. We have really focused on extended notation and renaming.

This week in maths we were learning Place Value and did some problem solving.

The 3 and 4 digit people were learning how to rename and expand numbers. Rishi said that “because it was my first time expanding numbers I felt good because it was very fun to do.” Isobel said she felt “special because I got to go onto 4 digits.” Kyle “felt excellent because it was my first time on 3 digits and it was harder than 2 digits.”

The teen and ty people got a white board and drew the teen numbers and numbers up to 30. We also got to match the sails to the right boats.

The 2 digit people got to work with paddle pop sticks to make numbers we also used base ten blocks.

We chose a number and we were writing clues because we played a game earlier with Miss Carey, then we got a sheet and we cut it in half and wrote some clues so that people could what our number was.

Over the last few weeks Grade 1/2s have been working on their Place Value goals in Numeracy.

They have learnt some fun and challenging maths games that have required them to play cooperatively, use their knowledge of place value, their addition strategies as well strategic thinking and problem solving. Some students had to apply a Growth Mindset to the challenges that they faced during these games. Some children learnt that you can be playing strategically and using all your maths strategies and still just be ‘unlucky’ and lose. Other students learnt to take risks, whilst some learnt to be cautious about where they placed their numbers.

Ask your child to show you how to play the ‘Guess My Number Game’ and ‘Overs and Unders’. Below is how Overs and Unders is set up.

Week 2 Numeracy – Place Value

This week we tried soemthing new with maths. We split the students into their Place Value goal groups and had the teen/ty group working with Mrs Cooper, 2 digits with Miss Carey, 3 digits with Miss Sanford and 4+ digits with Mrs Tapscott for three of our maths sessions. The sessions went really well with students working with students who have similar goals from the other three classes.

The teen/ty group were learning the difference between teen and ty numbers, they were making, writing and drawing the numbers.

The 2 digit group were learning to count by 10s from any number to help them work out 10 more or less than a number, they were also ordering numbers on number lines.

The 3 digit group were learning to work out 10 more or less and 100 more or less than a number bridging the decade, for example; ten less than 304. They were also learning to rename numbers.

The 4 digits were renaming 4 digit numbers, identifying if a number was odd or even, counting by 1000s, writing numbers in extended notation and rounding to the nearest 10, 100 or 1000.

We look forward to continuing to teach the children in similar needs groups next week for Addition.

This week we have started the term by extending our knowledge and understandings of place value.

The students whose learning goal is understanding the difference between teen and ty numbers came up with some definitions. They said that a teen number has one ten and some ones and that a ty number has some tens and no ones.

I also introduced a new game to the students that I learned at a Michael Ymer PD recently called Overs and Unders.
Overs and Unders is a great game because it can be adapted to suit any level. My teen/ty and 2 digit students were aiming to get as close to 100 as they could, whilst the 3 digit students were trying to get as close to 1000 as possible, the 4 digit group were aiming for 10 000.

The students played in partners, taking it in turns to roll a ten sided dice for each other. The student would decide if the number rolled (say 6) would become 6000, 600, 60 or 6 and write it in the correct place, students cummulatively added what they had rolled to continuously see their total. After ten goes, they would work out how much over or under (10 000, 1000 or 100) they were.

You can see a photo of the game that Pat and I played when we were modelling how to play the game to the whole class.

Week 9 – Numeracy – Revising Place Value

Posted by misscarey | Posted in Numeracy | Posted on 19/06/2014

We are revising some of the things that we have learned in Maths so far this year.

We have revisited Place Value and have been working on understanding 10 more and 10 less than a number, locating numbers on a number line and putting numbers into order from smallest to largest.

You can see some of their work below.
