This week we continued to focus on the orientation of narratives, but we were focusing on the setting.

We all got to draw the setting for our story and then we had to write the description for some else’s setting.

Week 2 Literacy – Narratives – Characters

This week in Literacy we have been learning that we need to describe our main character in the orientation.

Mr Kean showed us a video clip where a character was describing a bad guy so that some one else could draw it, so the police could find the bad guy. We had a go at drawing the bad guy from the description. We knew that one of his eyes had an eye patch, but they didn’t describe his other eye, so we didn’t know what to do.

We got to draw our own character and then write a description about them. This description will help us write our orientation later.

Week 1 Literacy – Writing Narratives – Pronouns

This week we have started our Narrative unit. We have been focusing on pronouns. Pronouns are words that can replace nouns. We learnt that we don’t want to write a sentence with lots of names; for example ‘Billy ran across the oval, then Billy jumped over the log, after that Billy rolled down the hill.” We can change the sentence by using some pronouns instead of the noun, like this; “Billy ran across the oval, then he jumped over the log, after that he rolled down the hill.” We remembered that it’s a good idea to use the pronoun, noun, noun pattern when writing.

Here are some YouTube clips that we watched.

Week 4 Literacy – Narratives

This week students were required to write a narrative for the teachers to moderate for report writing. The Grade 1/2s wrote some fantastic narratives about a boy stranded on a desert island. The students in my grade were really working on their writing goals. Students had a go at using the editing pens to edit their work. Our class had a really good discussion about whether they thought that their writing had improved since the middle of the year. Most students believed that their writing has improved and could tell me how it got better. The students were able to talk about their goals and whether they had met them, reflecting back to what their writing was like at the start of the year. Knowing what they are learning and why is very important, and it was great to hear and see that most of 1/2 AC could talk about their writing goals and progress.

You can see the picture that was their inspiration below.

In Literacy this week we have been learning about narratives. Students have been engaged in Rocket Writing narratives about pictures that we put up as inspiration.

Students were then required to edit their writing using the editing pens and their Have-A-Go Books to improve their writing.

It will be great to see the students continue to develop their narrative writing skills next week.
