Posted by misscarey | Posted in Literacy | Posted on 30/10/2015

This week we have continued with Rocket Writing. Everyone is really enjoying it, there are often cheers when we say that we are going to do Rocket Writing. This week after writing the students have got together with a partner to give some Star and Step feedback to each other. You can read some of the feedback that they have given each other in the photos below. It is great to see that the students are giving feedback which is kind, specific and helpful. You can click on the image to view it larger. If you leave any feedback, please write your feedback on the main post, not the picture.

Week 3 Literacy – Rocket Writing

Posted by misscarey | Posted in Literacy | Posted on 23/10/2015

This week we have done some Rocket Writing. Rocket Writing is lots of fun! It is when the students are shown an inspirational picture, word or phrase and have a short amount of time to write, without any planning time. Students are allowed to write any text type they like, the focus is on just writing for enjoyment. There were only a few hesitant starters, but everyone got something written down and as I walked around I could see how engaged everyone was.

Here are a few examples of what the students were able to write in just 10 minutes. I have taken the liberty to fix up some of the spelling and punctuation.

There was a sheep. He was dawdling. He was lazy and a goat pushed the sheep in the bottom and ran away from the sheep. The sheep started to run. He ran so fast he started… Ella

There once was a lamb who was lonely. He did not have any food or drinks. He was living in a tree. He didn’t have a bed also he was very poor and he couldn’t buy anything. Rishi

One day I was walking to Isobel’s house for a sleepover. I wasn’t there yet and my friend Sarah the lamb was flying, she said ‘hi Miah, Stella the witch made me fly by magic. Aleara is trying to stop me. Stop! You’ll get turned into something.’ So she hid behind the bushes. ‘How do I get down?’ Sarah said ‘I’ll get the wand and make you come back down.’ So I ran and jumped and… Miah

Here are some photos from Daily 5 this week.

Week 2 Literacy – Expositions

Posted by misscarey | Posted in Literacy, Uncategorized | Posted on 23/10/2015

We have continued writing expositions this week. Many of the students have nearly finished their expositions.

Together we wrote an exposition about why children should learn to swim. This was typed up and pinned up at the Ararat Fitness Centre where members of the community can read our exposition and learn about the importance of learning to swim.

TASK: Proper Nouns

2

Posted by misscarey | Posted in Literacy, Tasks | Posted on 09/10/2015

This week we have been learning the difference between nouns and proper nouns.

We already know that nouns are names of; people, places and things.

Proper nouns begin with capital letters and are the names of specific people and places.

You can see the poster that we made in class turning common nouns into proper nouns.

Common nouns vs proper nouns

If you are still unsure about what a proper noun is, watch the video below.

Can you list some proper nouns? Write them in the comments section.

This week we have started to learn about expositions. Everyone remembered learning about them earlier in the year. We started by reading an exposition and then came up with the Learning Intention and Success Criteria. This is our Learning Intention and Success Criteria.

 LI and SC exposition

During the week, we read lots of expositions, wrote expositions as a whole class after coming up with them orally. We then had a go at planning an exposition in small groups.

Working together to come up with arguments for a group exposition.

The students have enjoyed getting back into Daily 5.

TASK: Contractions

0

Posted by misscarey | Posted in Literacy, Tasks | Posted on 06/10/2015

This week our class took an interest in contractions and we made it a challenge to go home and work out what words, such as here’s and she’ll meant. We eventually worked out that they were contractions and that contractions are two words which have had some letters chopped out and an apostrophe replace them.

You can watch some of the videos to help you remember what contractions are:

Can you think of anymore contractions? Write them in the comments section during Daily 5.

Week 8 Literacy – Character traits

Posted by misscarey | Posted in Literacy | Posted on 04/09/2015

We continued learning about character traits this week.

We read an interesting book called ‘The Love Monster’ and discovered that he had character traits of a kind, caring and sharing person, but he was starting to show character traits like, greed and selfishness when he was thinking about eating all the chocolates by himself. Check out our poster below.

We also listened to the story ‘The Hare and the Tortoise’ and compared their character traits. We thought about which character traits we shared with either the Tortoise or the Hare during our skipping race.

Mr Kean made some punctuation games. The paddle pop one was very challenging.

Week 3 Literacy – Narratives – Orientation

0

Posted by misscarey | Posted in Literacy | Posted on 30/07/2015

This week we continued to focus on the orientation of narratives, but we were focusing on the setting.

We all got to draw the setting for our story and then we had to write the description for some else’s setting.

Week 2 Literacy – Narratives – Characters

0

Posted by misscarey | Posted in Literacy | Posted on 23/07/2015

This week in Literacy we have been learning that we need to describe our main character in the orientation.

Mr Kean showed us a video clip where a character was describing a bad guy so that some one else could draw it, so the police could find the bad guy. We had a go at drawing the bad guy from the description. We knew that one of his eyes had an eye patch, but they didn’t describe his other eye, so we didn’t know what to do.

We got to draw our own character and then write a description about them. This description will help us write our orientation later.

Week 1 Literacy – Writing Narratives – Pronouns

2

Posted by misscarey | Posted in Literacy | Posted on 15/07/2015

This week we have started our Narrative unit. We have been focusing on pronouns. Pronouns are words that can replace nouns. We learnt that we don’t want to write a sentence with lots of names; for example ‘Billy ran across the oval, then Billy jumped over the log, after that Billy rolled down the hill.” We can change the sentence by using some pronouns instead of the noun, like this; “Billy ran across the oval, then he jumped over the log, after that he rolled down the hill.” We remembered that it’s a good idea to use the pronoun, noun, noun pattern when writing.

Here are some YouTube clips that we watched.

Week 10 Literacy – reflecting on ‘The Smallest Girl Ever’

Posted by misscarey | Posted in Literacy | Posted on 19/06/2015

In class, we have been reading the novel ‘The Smallest Girl Ever’ and we finished it today. Here is what the children thought of the characters.

Keep your eyes on this space for a recount of the story.

Week 9 Literacy – Descriptions

Daily 5 – Word Work

3

Posted by misscarey | Posted in Literacy | Posted on 05/06/2015

When we do spelling we sometimes get to work in groups to write as many words as we can that have the sound we are learning about. Today we were making lists for the ‘l blends’. You can see us working together below.

IMG_2202 IMG_2203

In Daily 5 there are lots of Word Work activities to choose from. One of them is called ‘Parts of Speech’. You have to sort the words into; nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns and conjunctions. Isobel had a go at this game for the first time today, she did a really good job and only had two mistakes. Nice work Isobel!

Week 8 Literacy – Descriptions

8

Posted by misscarey | Posted in Literacy | Posted on 03/06/2015

This week we are continuing to learn about descriptions.

Miss Carey read a description of a Kooky Clown and we had to listen really hard and draw what we thought it would look like.

This is the description that she read:
– This is a clown’s head that is in the middle of your page.
– It takes up 3/4 of your page.
– The clown has a round head with a white face.
– His curly hair is bright blue and it sticks out from his face.
– He has two big eyes that are positioned in the top half of his face. They are round at the top and straight along the bottom.
– His eyes are blue with black pupils.
– He has two black eyebrows just above his eyes.
– His nose is a big, shiny red circle.
– He has a big, wide smile that takes up the bottom third of his face. He has big red lips that are in an open smile.
– He is wearing a bright pink bow-tie that sits just under his head.
– On his head is a yellow top hat that is tilted slightly to his right.

The students drew a first draft, then they gave feedback to a partner and listened to their partners feedback to try and improve it. Then they listened to the description again and drew a second draft. When they were finished they gave each other some final feedback.

This is some of the feedback that they gave each other at the end:

“You have a good nose, because you made it bright red and used texta like I told you to.” Kyle to Phoebe

“I like your bow because it is the right size and I like your nose because you have done it a bit bigger.” Phoebe to Kyle

“I like how you do the bow tie because it’s bigger.” Ryan to Sarah

“I like how you do the hat because it’s the right size, in your other one it was a little bit smaller and you made it bigger on your second draft.” Miah to Max

“I think you should don’t have any ears because it didn’t have any ears when Miss Carey said it.” Indi to Ashton

“I like how you did the nose because it’s big and round and shiny and I like how you did the hat because the flower was good and I like how the eyebrows were there because they are all straight.” Bella to Miley

You can see some photos of the first and final drafts below.
