Week 3 Literacy – Narratives – Orientation

Posted by misscarey | Posted in Literacy | Posted on 30/07/2015

This week we continued to focus on the orientation of narratives, but we were focusing on the setting.

We all got to draw the setting for our story and then we had to write the description for some else’s setting.

Week 3 Numeracy – Statistics and Probability

Posted by misscarey | Posted in Numeracy | Posted on 30/07/2015

We have been doing Statistics and Probability this week.

We have really enjoyed using the big graph on our classroom door, that Mr Kean made for us. It has been lots of fun coming up with questions and possible answers for our graph. We learnt how to make and read a graph.

We learnt that some events are certain, others are impossible and most other events fall in between. They could be likely, or unlikely.

We played lots of games that involve probability, like heads and tails and games where we spun a spinner and only the person whose colour it was got to move. We learnt that if you do something a lot of times, like flipping a coin, that heads and tails will come up very close to the same amount of times.

Week 3 Discoveries

Posted by misscarey | Posted in Discoveries, Special Events | Posted on 30/07/2015

On Tuesday we went to Trigg’s farm. It was SO cold! They are a dairy and potato farm. We got to see some cows being milked on the rotary milker and then we got to look in the vats at the milk. After it has been in the vats, a milk tanker picks it up. We really liked seeing the calves, one of them was only a day old and was struggling to walk. The silage was so smelly! They are going to make electricity out of POO!

We got to walk down the road to the potato sheds. Lots of people ran. There were heaps of potatoes! They were all different shapes and sizes. We found out that potatoes can be lots of colours, like; white, yellow, purple, green, brown, pink. They gave Mrs Tapscott a big bag of potatoes to take back to school.

On Thursday, we got to help cook potato cakes. It was good fun. We had to learn how to peel a potato and after Mrs Hind shredded the potatoes we had to squeeze the starch out of them. The potato cakes were yum. This is how we made them:

  • Potatoes
  • Salt
  • Oil

  • Peelers
  • Electric fry pan
  • Paper towel
  • Food processor

  1. Peel the potatoes
  2. Wash the potatoes
  3. Put the potatoes through the food processor, into a bowl
  4. Squeeze the starch out of the potatoes into another bowl
  5. Put the squeezed potato back in the bowl and add some salt
  6. Heat some oil in the electric fry pan
  7. Make small circles of potato
  8. Put the circles of potato in the fry pan
  9. Cook until slightly browned
  10. Remove from pan and put on a plate with paper towel
  11. Eat and enjoy.

Week 2 Numeracy – Patterns

Posted by misscarey | Posted in Numeracy | Posted on 23/07/2015

This week in Numeracy we have been looking at patterns. We have learnt that there are two main kinds of patterns. One type of pattern repeats, these could be colours, shapes, numbers and anything else. You can see some photos of repeating patterns below.

The other type of patterns grow. A growing pattern follows a rule; for example, 3, 6, 9, 12 where the numbers go up but they go up by the same number, this pattern’s rule is +3.

Week 1 Discoveries – Where does it come from?

Posted by misscarey | Posted in Discoveries | Posted on 23/07/2015

We started our new Discoveries unit this week, titled “where does it come from?” In this unit we are looking at our clothing and food, and where these products have started from. We have learned that most of our food comes from plants and some comes from animals. We had a go at tracing our food back to its sources.

Week 2 Discoveries – Living and Non-living

Posted by misscarey | Posted in Discoveries | Posted on 23/07/2015

This week we learnt the difference between living and non-living things.

Living things can grow, move on its own, and needs water, food and air to survive.

Non-living things don’t grow, can’t move by themselves, don’t have babies or need water, food or air.

We got to sort some pictures into living and non-living and we then went outside to take photos of living and non-living things.

Week 2 Literacy – Narratives – Characters

Posted by misscarey | Posted in Literacy | Posted on 23/07/2015

This week in Literacy we have been learning that we need to describe our main character in the orientation.

Mr Kean showed us a video clip where a character was describing a bad guy so that some one else could draw it, so the police could find the bad guy. We had a go at drawing the bad guy from the description. We knew that one of his eyes had an eye patch, but they didn’t describe his other eye, so we didn’t know what to do.

We got to draw our own character and then write a description about them. This description will help us write our orientation later.

Week 1 Numeracy – Place Value

Posted by misscarey | Posted in Numeracy | Posted on 17/07/2015

This week in maths we were learning Place Value and did some problem solving.

The 3 and 4 digit people were learning how to rename and expand numbers. Rishi said that “because it was my first time expanding numbers I felt good because it was very fun to do.” Isobel said she felt “special because I got to go onto 4 digits.” Kyle “felt excellent because it was my first time on 3 digits and it was harder than 2 digits.”

The teen and ty people got a white board and drew the teen numbers and numbers up to 30. We also got to match the sails to the right boats.

The 2 digit people got to work with paddle pop sticks to make numbers we also used base ten blocks.

We chose a number and we were writing clues because we played a game earlier with Miss Carey, then we got a sheet and we cut it in half and wrote some clues so that people could what our number was.

Week 1 Literacy – Writing Narratives – Pronouns

Posted by misscarey | Posted in Literacy | Posted on 15/07/2015

This week we have started our Narrative unit. We have been focusing on pronouns. Pronouns are words that can replace nouns. We learnt that we don’t want to write a sentence with lots of names; for example ‘Billy ran across the oval, then Billy jumped over the log, after that Billy rolled down the hill.” We can change the sentence by using some pronouns instead of the noun, like this; “Billy ran across the oval, then he jumped over the log, after that he rolled down the hill.” We remembered that it’s a good idea to use the pronoun, noun, noun pattern when writing.

Here are some YouTube clips that we watched.
