We have continued to speak and write descriptions this week. As a class we came up with a description about a baby koala, then the students went away and independentally wrote up what they could remember, they were focusing on text structure and using capital letters correctly. The following day they worked with a partner to edit each others writing for capital letters.

This is what their baby koala descriptions were like, the type of sentence is written in capitals next to the sentence for you to see:

This week the students have continued learning about multiplication. They now know how to show multiplication as; group of, as rows of (arrays) and repeated addition.

We read ‘One is a Snail, Ten is a Crab’ and made posters about the groups of animals. You can see some posters that demonstrate their growing understanding of multiplication.

This week has been another exciting week in Discoveries with many students choosing to do challenging and interesting projects. Some of the projects that are on the go at the moment are; Jono who is making a mini golf course and will hold a mini golf hole in one competition, Amity is organising a soccer goal kicking competition and Odin who is organising a footy goal kicking competition. We are hoping to hold all three of these competitions on the same day, with money raised going to the Footy Colours Day Cancer fundraiser. Ava has started preparing a finger knitted jewellery stall and busy creating necklaces, bracelets and rings. We will let you know more information as their projects near completion.

Check out the photos below to see what has been happening in Discoveries.

Week 5 Literacy – Book Character Descriptions

Posted by misscarey | Posted in Literacy, Special Events | Posted on 15/08/2014

Last week I attended an inspiring PD along with the rest of the staff from Ararat 800 and we learnt many great things about teaching spelling and writing. The 1/2 teachers have decided to spend a lot of time teaching our students how to write descriptions really well, as descriptions are a very important stepping stone for our students to be able to write other text types.

This week was Book Week and all the students dressed up fabulously as their favourite book character. All students have been working on planning, drafting, editing and publishing their descriptions.

You can see a photo of how we planned and a few of the descriptions that were finished. As they are finished they will be hung up in our classroom and you are welcome to come in and read your child’s description.

We have continued with Literacy and Numeracy week activities this week. The students have all been involved in estimation activities. They have had to estimate:
– the difference in height between Mr Pilgrim and Rishi
– the weight of Pip the pumpkin
– the time that the clock stopped
– how many pages were in the book and
– how many lollies were in the jar.

Next week is Book Week and we will be celebrating by dressing up for the theme of ‘Stepping off the Page’ and then doing special activities based around the short listed children’s books with our Buddy Groups. There will also be a special assembly in the afternoon.
